Twenty-five years ago Shirley Walter Allen joined the faculty of our University as Professor of Forestry and Conservation. In the four years immediately preceding 1928, he was Forester and Legislative Representative of the American Forestry Association, Washington, D.C.

From 1909 to 1928, excluding four years spent as a member of the faculty of the New York State College of Forestry, at Syracuse, New York, and one year in private business, Professor Allen was successively Forest Assistant, Deputy Supervisor, and Supervisor in the United States Forest Service.

His distinction in forestry and conservation has been recognized in many ways and through many agencies in this country and abroad. He has served on state and national planning commissions, has been President of the Society of American Foresters, and was official delegate from the United States to the Second International Forestry Congress in Budapest. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

In addition to his professional achievement, his state and his city have benefitted from his willingness always to lend his ability to the solution of problems within the field of his competence. October 4, 1953, he reached his seventieth birthday and became eligible for retirement under the provisions of our Bylaws.

The Regents of the University give to Professor Allen their kind thanks and confer upon him the title Professor Emeritus of Forestry and invite him to avail himself of all the courtesies that are customarily extended to emeritus members of the faculty.
