Julie C. Grygotis, A.M.L.S., senior associate librarian in the University Library, retired from active faculty status on August 31,2009.

Ms. Grygotis received her B.A. degree from Michigan State University in 1970 and her A.M.L.S. degree from the University of Michigan in 1972. She joined the University of Michigan faculty as an assistant librarian in 1972, and was promoted to associate librarian in 1975 and senior associate librarian in 1985.

As head of the Retrospective Conversion Unit in the Monograph Cataloging Division, Ms. Grygotis led the in-house conversion of bibliographic card catalog records into machine readable form, which became the basis of the library's online catalog. In 1987, Ms. Grygotis became the head of the Automation Unit, which was responsible for high speed cataloging of monographs in all Western languages for the University Library system. Later, she managed the Pinyin Conversion Project, which converted catalog records from the Wade Giles to the Pinyin system as recognized by the People's Republic of China, and then became head of the Authorities and Database Management Unit.

The University Library was one of the first and largest libraries to complete a comprehensive retrospective conversion of its card catalog records into machine readable form, and through her leadership of this and subsequent efforts, Ms. Grygotis has had a significant impact on the development of the library's modem online catalog services. She served on the Mirlyn Implementation Team, which launched the library's first online catalog in 1988, and was also a member and chair of the Cataloging Policy Council.

The Regents now salute this distinguished librarian for her dedicated service by naming Julie C. Grygotis senior associate librarian emerita.
