As one of the world’s first libraries to be digitized through the Google Book project, the University of Michigan libraries have created and now provide leadership for the HathiTrust, a partnership of major research institutions and libraries working to ensure that the cultural record is preserved and accessible long into the future. There are more than 60 partners in the HathiTrust, and membership is open to institutions worldwide.
The HathiTrust Digital Library brings together immense collections of partner institutions in digital form, preserving them securely to be accessed and used today and in future generations. Unlike the Google Book project, which provides only search access and limited view of books, the HathiTrust digital library also works to provide open, full-text access on the Internet to library materials no longer restricted by copyright. The HathiTrust Digital Library currently contains over 10.4 million volumes, of which 3.1 million are in the public domain and full-text accessible over the Internet.
The University of Michigan Historical Collections
Recognizing the importance of providing broad access to historical materials concerning the University of Michigan, the Regents of the University agreed in 2010 to waive copyright restrictions on any books or other materials concerning the University that held University (Regent) copyright. This included books published by the University of Michigan Press, historical materials held by the Bentley Library, publications created by schools, colleges, and other University organizations.
This website has provided an initial list and weblinks to many of these materials to assist in preparing for the University’s Bicentennial.
