Ann Arbor, Michigan

1854 Map

Note the seven proposed University buildings on State Street. When Henry Tappan became President in 1852 he suggested that no new buildings were needed, except an Observatory.  The University Building (later named Mason Hall) and South College were the only two academic buildings on the campus in 1852.  Tappan sent the students out into the community to find room and board, thus freeing both buildings for academic purposes.

This 1854 map of the City of Ann Arbor was surveyed and published by D. A. Pettibone, Ann Arbor.
